Kiss The Sky

ABC WEDNESDAY...D IS FOR...DEPRESSION
“The burden of depression is heavy and it doesn't have handles.”
- Susan English

"Good morning, Eeyore," said Pooh.
"Good morning, Pooh Bear," said Eeyore gloomily. "If it is a good morning, which I doubt," said he.
"Why, what's the matter?"
"Nothing, Pooh Bear, nothing. We can't all, and some of us don't. That's all there is to it."
"Can't all what?" said Pooh, rubbing his nose.
"Gaiety. Song-and-dance. Here we go round the mulberry bush."
  1. A. Milne

Today I am sharing my blue-print for survival; things I need to remember and actions I need to take each day to beat depression.

***DON’T TAKE MYSELF TOO SERIOUSLY.

  1. Take my Prozac.
  2. Drink lots of coffee but not after noon.
  3. In general, mind my own business and stay off the radar screen.
  4. Blog, read, write, laugh, paint, take pictures, doodle
  5. Remember bad days are unavoidable – try to take it in stride.
  6. Speak up but be appropriate– be tough but kind– because swallowing frustration turns into depression.
  7. Remember marriage and relationships aren’t utopia.
  8. Get out of the house.
  9. Exit my comfort zone.
  10. Remember famous beauties are not immune to depression
  11. If I can’t love my body; think of someone who is stuck in a wheelchair; avoid the scale altogether -- and remember that Food is NOT the "F" word!!!!
  12. Remember plastic surgery is excruciatingly painful.

***DON’T TAKE MY WORLD TOO SERIOUSLY...

  1. Care about politics and issues of substance.
  2. Think small – take one step at a time.
  3. Choose my battles.
  4. Donate money to good causes.
  5. Tune-In: Remain focused; do not anesthetize myself with too much TV watching.
  6. Promote, vote, and lobby in my own best interests. If I don’t vote, then I can’t complain. Use PMS and/or menopause to tell leaders they SUCK!!

This sounds like a list that most of us should live by. I think the world would be a better place.

God. I'm exhausted just READING about all of that. Can't we just stay home and eat in front of tv?

Seriously, depression is indeed a great dark bird, and getting moving with it on one's back blocking the light is a heroic action.

Hi Pouty
I am with you here on this post. I have had this big D sitting over my left shoulder since 1970.
It is a monster that can suck you in, unless you learn how to deal with it, in ones own particular way.
My ways are similar to your list, my Doc says to just take a Prozac a day as if it was an aspirin for a headache, and not think about it as a prop.
My own demons try to rear their multiheads every now and then, but I think I now have it taped right, and I get through once more.
Bless you dear one
Love Granny

A A Milne played a blinder, with Eyore's lugubrious attitude, don't you think? Perhaps you now need to research Tigger and his bounce? I reckon he's a great optimist!

Hang in there Pouty.

Having suffered three bouts of chemically induced depression in my time, I hear you. Got great lists going there.

I'd add to your list, listen to some music every day. It has mysterious qualities.

I would add one more to the list. Avoid getting stressed by things you can do nothing about. People can sometimes be very critical about this, but that's their problem, not yours. I have found, to my cost, that reading about greyhound abuse in other countries (one of my own particular stressors) can send me in a downward spiral and add in the odd panic attack, and at the same time helps the dogs not one little bit. Learn what you can do, and what you can't do, and stick with it.

Great post for D!

That is one tall order, but definitely doable. I know how depression is like. Every once in a while I am also forced to pay a visit to that dar, cold, foreboding world where there is nothing and no one but the vast, frigid gloominess. And everything you have jotted down are the very same things I have been practicing ever since. One motto which I myself have created and repeat to myself almost every single day is this: "Even if the world outside is dark, nothing changes in my own little world where everything and enything is bright and beautiful, exactly the way I want them."
